OK, so you've got problems with your electronic air purifier system and you're not sure what the problem is. You're not alone. Air Purifier Model Problems to look for Solutions and things to try or test

ALL UNITS / ALL BRANDS

Test all these areas for all brands and models of air purifiers.

WARNING: Repair and diagnosis of an air purifier may involve AC and High Voltage currents. If you are not qualified, or do not understand the risks, please leave the repair to a qualified technician. ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR UNIT BEFORE SERVICING

No Power to the Unit

1) check to make sure the power cord is connected well on the back of the unit.
2) make sure it is plugged in and no circuit breakers are tripped.
3) check to make sure all filters are properly seated. Some machines have a device that keeps the unit from operating when the back or filter has been removed.
4) Check the fuse to make sure it has not been blown.
No Ozone Produced

When working, you should hear a slight buzzing coming from the plates in the unit. If you do not hear the buzzing with the level turned up, in a darkened room, look inside the unit while it is running. If you do not see a blue glow on the sides of the ozone plate, then you may need to clean the plate(s). This is also be a good time to inspect the plates for any cracks. Turn off and unplug the machine, remove the plates and inspect them. If there is any wear or damage to the plates, they should be replaced. Ozone Plates

Fan does not turn This may be due a bad fan motor. If all other functions work, this is a likely solution. Motors
Reduced Air Flow Be sure the filter is clean. If the filter is removable, you can clean it with a light detergent and water and let it dry overnight. It is ok to use a hair dryer to dry it if you'd like to use it sooner.
FA 120FA (Fresh Air 1 series)

The Fresh Air has several user replacable items in it. These include: the UV Bulb, Bulb Starter, Ozone Plates, Target Plate, and the Carbon Back filter.

 

Most problems with this unit simply require the replacement of the above items as needed.
No Ozone being emitted from the unit

1) Check the Ozone Plate. If you do not see a glow on the plate, it may need to be replaced.
2) If you replace the Ozone Plate, and still no ozone is being created, you may need to check the connectors that connect to the ozone plate bracket. They sometimes get corroded due to extra ozone in the unit. If this is the case, you need to replace them and get a new target plate.

UV Lamp is not glowing Replace the UV Lamp and Starter. A bad starter can blow a good bulb, so always replace both at one time.
If you have an old wire mesh target plate...

... then you need to replace it with a new one. The original plate was found to be too large and it restricted air flow, retaining the ozone inside the unit. The new one is made of a better material and is smaller. The target plate needs to be replaced every 12-24 months. It has chemicals on it that react to the UV Light to produce additional cleaning particles.

Fresh Air Parts

FA2, FA2.1
and later

The most often experienced problem with these models is the RCI cell.

 

Just a word about what the RCI cell does.

Replace it when the display says “Replace theRCI cell” remove the back and filter. Now unplug the RCI cord and remove two thum-nuts hollding the RCI in place. Remove it and replace it with the new one. Plug it in and put it back together and you are done.

The honeycomb is treated with special chemical that reacts to the rays from the UV light to to produce low-level safeoxidizers and superoxide ions for everyday applications. After two years these chemicals have been used up, and that cell is no longer working. Replace after two years whether the light comes on or not.

The most often experienced problem with this unit is: plates that need cleaning.


It uses a 5000 vac transformer to power the ozone plate. And this transformer can also go bad.


Also the fan motor bearings may go out.

Clean the plate with ammonia and a tooth brush, all the way to the edge rinse with water and let it dry over night. It is OK to use a hair dryer

A simple test to see if the voltage is present on the plate is to use an insulated screwdriver and quickly touch it across the bars above the plate looking for a good spark or arc. If you don’t get the arcthe transformer may be dead, and there are no more available. It could also be your Ozone control that is bad. If your transformer is bad, then this unit will no longer be usable.

Also, check the safety switch. It must be pushed in toward the front to work.

To check a transformer, apply 110VAC to the transformer where the black wires connect. If the High Voltage is present on the other side of the transformer, then the control may be bad.

The motor can be removed from the front after pulling the fan blade off the motor shaft.

XL-15+

NOTE: This model has a switch on the front (Auto or normal), Always use the normal position (the automatic never did work right).

The most often experienced problem with this unit is plates that need cleaning.

After removing the cover, extact the plate and clean it. Clean the plate with ammonia and a tooth brush, all the way to the edge rinse with water and let it dry over night. It is OK to use a hair dryer so you can put it back in service at the same time.
